JASPER designers appreciate that caring for babies and children is a demanding time for parents and carers and that the best kitchen designs can make life much easier by creating an efficient, safe, hardwearing and easy to clean space.

HOW DO YOU DESIGN A KITCHEN FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN?

  • The layout of the kitchen cabinetry should have priority over expensive finishes – doors and bench tops can always be upgraded later.
  • The cabinetry design should keep babies and toddlers away from hot appliances.
  • Over the life of your new kitchen cabinetry, your babies will grow into teenagers so keeping the layout flexible is a big advantage.
  • Door and bench top finishes in custom cabinetry can be selected from the wide range of materials  and colours available that fulfil your needs.
  • A well placed floor cabinet, away from ovens but in sight, can provide a “toddler-entertainment-zone” storing plastics and other non-breakable items
  • Incorporating island benches and breakfast bars with seating, encourages communication and participation in cooking activities. Avoid cook tops and sinks in these spaces.
  • A mixture of drawer and standard cabinets keeps the kitchen more flexible. Stored items can always be rearranged to suit your needs as the children grow up.
  • Use door and drawer finishes on the cabinets that are tough and easy-to-clean.
  • Kitchen cabinetry with handles will help to keep sticky fingers off the cabinets doors and drawer faces.
  • Child-proof latches can be attached to handles on cabinets and removed later
  • Pull out storage accessories in pantry and corner unit cabinets can be damaged if children climb on them
