TIPS ON LIGHTING

  • Lighting in a room can be coming from lights mounted in or hanging from the ceiling, from wall mounted lights or from lights integrated into appliances or cabinets and joinery.
  • Once your new layout of benches and cabinets have been decided take some time to think about what activities are likely to be happening in each part of the room. In a kitchen, the activities would include food preparation, washing up and cooking. A laundry might include washing, sorting or folding.
  • Any activity that involves the use of knives or close inspection of food must have strong lighting with no shadowing to prevent accidents and injury.
  • For each activity make some notes about the type of lighting that is needed. Examples of these might be;
  • Strong direct light over food preparation bench
  • Check rangehood lights to make sure they will be bright enough
  • Strong direct light over sink
  • Pantry light needed
  • Discuss your lighting needs with your electrician, lighting supplier and a JASPER designer to look at the options for room and cabinet lights and switches.
  • LED are the best type of lights to be incorporated into cabinets. Unlike lights such as halogen, they do not usually generate excessive heat.
  • Lights in cabinets will require modifications to the cabinets to accommodate the lights and cabling.
